From September 22 to 24, 2011, the Peace Corps celebrated its fiftieth anniversary! Indeed, in 1961, the American Peace Corps was established by President John F. Kennedy.
To celebrate the historic event as well as collaboration between Burkina Faso and the American Peace Corps, volunteers in Burkina organized a three-day long fair which highlighted the Peace Corps’ mission:
1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women;
2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the people served; and
3. To help promote a better understanding of other people on the part of Americans.
Volunteers who live and work in Burkina came with members of their different communities and villages to present their work and projects that they have done during their service and present projects that are currently still in the process. This exhibition showed the true value of friendship and the relationship between Burkinabes and Americans. The guests and the public had the opportunity to enjoy different activities such as dramas, various awareness campaigns, a fashion show, a carnival, and even a concert. One of the most beloved Burkinabe musicians, Floby, wrote a special song for the anniversary of the Peace Corps which was presented the last day of the fair.
Burkinabe food and drinks were available as well as exhibitions and handicrafts were for sale from all regions of Burkina Faso. This fair celebrated the history of friendship between Burkina Faso and the Peace Corps and also helped raise awareness and promote the work done by American volunteers in their respective communities.
